Lakes

Fruška Gora Lakes

There are 16 artificial lakes on Fruška Gora. Of these, 13 were strategically built for irrigation and preventing flooding of arable land. 11 lakes are suitable and safe for visitors. Lakes such as Beli Kamen and Ledinačko were formed by unplanned flooding of mining sites. Most of the lakes have been stocked with fish, suitable for sport fishing, and attract nature lovers.

Beli Kamen Lake

Bešenovačko Lake, or Beli Kamen, is located near the village of Bešenovo, on Fruška Gora. It is about twenty kilometers from Sremska Mitrovica and Ruma. Beli Kamen, a gem of Fruška Gora, is a former limestone quarry owned by the Beočin cement factory, now contrasting the blue waters and white stone, reminiscent of the Mediterranean. After the quarry was exhausted, the lake began to fill with water in the 1980s, reaching a depth of about 50 meters after over twenty years. The water level continues to rise. Locals say that the main water vein was cut during the mining process, leading to the drying up of nearby springs. The water is clear, transparent, with an unusual turquoise color, and is considered medicinal due to its mineral content. Visitors often apply mud from the shore, believed to be healthy. This lake is different from other accumulation lakes and is similar in origin to Ledinačko Lake. Rare anglers remember that Bešenovačko Lake used to be rich in fish, now mostly caught, with remaining species including grass carp, redfin perch, and roach. Schools of small fish can be seen in the shallows.

Borkovac Lake

Borkovac Lake is located on the southern slopes of Fruška Gora, just a few kilometers from the center of Ruma. The lake covers an area of 42 hectares with a maximum depth of five meters. This accumulation was created in the 1970s by constructing a dam on the Borkovac stream. Initially intended for irrigation, it is now a significant tourist destination for nature and fishing enthusiasts. It is exceptionally rich in various fish species, hosting an annual fishing competition every May. The lake features a well-maintained beach with showers and amenities, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and recreation during hot summer days. An ecological “Aqua Camp” enhances the lake, consisting of four cabins on barges. Each cabin has several beds, two spacious terraces adorned with flowers, and its own boat for transporting guests to the shore. This accommodation is ideal for sport fishermen and anyone seeking a unique experience. Next to the lake is the Borkovac picnic area, and Pavlovačko Lake is only five kilometers away.

Ledinačko Lake

Another gem of Fruška Gora, formed in 1999 after the pumping operations of the Srebro quarry ceased. This area was mined for the rare volcanic rock trachyte, used for high-quality asphalt mixtures and concrete. The lake filled with underground waters and streams Lukin svetac and Srebrni potok, reaching a depth of around 50 meters at its peak. The steep cliffs, rich Fruška Gora forests, and intersecting streams that formed waterfalls made this lake enchanting – it was the jewel of Fruška Gora. The water was rich in minerals, creating a swimming sensation akin to the sea. The lake rejuvenated Ledince as a reward for all the hardships endured by locals during the quarry's operation. Since 2005, the lake and land have been owned by the Rakovac company “Alas.” Locals and environmental organizations have fought unsuccessfully to keep the lake and surroundings untouched. The lake was drained in summer 2009, and after the mineral extraction (which should last five years), land reclamation is planned, supposedly transforming the quarry into a "magnificent nature park." The lake is also known for being a filming location for the movies “Charleston for Ognjenka,” “We Are Not Angels 3,” and Zdravko Čolić’s music video “Ao nono bijela.” If you pass the Zvečan spring, you are on the right path to the viewpoint where you can see the lake. Follow the forest paths as the main road is owned by the quarry, so access is restricted. The viewpoint isn't the safest, so be cautious.

Throughout the year, except during fish spawning, it is a popular destination for sport fishermen and during summer for those seeking refuge from the heat. Its natural surroundings have become home to many animal species that enhance the beauty of this lake. At the end of the village, on the lake’s shore, stands the summer residence of Count Pajačević, built in the early 20th century, representing a unique attraction for anyone visiting this area. Lake Dobrodol

Near the village of Dobrodol, which has only a few houses, lies the lake of the same name. Like all the reservoirs of Fruška Gora, it was created in the 1970s for the purpose of irrigating agricultural land, flood protection, as well as fishing and tourism. It covers an area of 45 hectares and has a depth of about six meters. Along with Bešenovačko Lake, Dobrodol has the clearest water of all the Fruška Gora lakes. With an abundance of food, this lake is rich in large specimens of carp, grass carp, and zander, making it a true paradise for fishing enthusiasts. Few people can resist this beauty, especially on hot summer days. The experience at the lake is somewhat spoiled by the passage of motor vehicles over the dam heading towards the surrounding fields and the village of Žarkovac. Lake Međeš

Lake Međeš, better known as Šatrinačko Lake, was created by the accumulation of water after a dam was built on the Međeš stream for the purpose of irrigating what was once a large and famous orchard. It is located on the southern slope of Fruška Gora near the village of Šatrinci and not far from Irig. Its area is about 48 hectares, and its depth ranges from about 4 to 5 meters, reaching up to 12 meters in some places. There is a larger beach with showers that is gravel-covered only along the shore. Next to it is a sand volleyball court and table tennis, as well as a small restaurant where you can have a drink and a bite to eat. This lake is also privately owned, similar to Lake Šelovrenac, although it is not as urbanized and is not fenced, so access to the lake is open to all.
